A day after Shelby County Schools announced that the state's largest school district would remain closed the week following spring break in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the county's six surrounding municipal districts have followed suit.
All classes are cancelled through March 27 in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland and Millington.
In a statement, officials said the closure will allow time to thoroughly clean buildings and buses and time to plan ahead should they need to close longer.
Parents are being asked to heed health advice and think carefully about social gatherings over the extended break. Experts urge people to practice "social distancing."
Shelby County Schools will continue to feed students the week of March 23-27, in response to concerns that some children from food insecure homes would go hungry without school provided meals over the break.
Students can eat between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at 20 locations across the county.
Locations are listed on the Shelby County Schools website.
