Healthy Pantry Staples

Church Health

Pantry staples during quarantine or anytime.

Here are some general tips for healthy pantry staples to keep on hand. With these items, you can whip up an array of healthy meals and snacks.

A general tip for dry staples: remember to purchase low sodium canned versions when possible. This would include canned tomatoes and low sodium soups and broths.

General tip for grains: make sure to stock up on whole grains instead of refined processed grains. This would include quinoa, oats, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, barley, corn tortillas, and whole grain bread.

General tip for fruits and vegetables: avoid those mixed with sauces or tossed with added sugar if possible. Buy canned, frozen, or fresh vegetables, a variety of frozen fruit, dried and fresh fruit. Fruits that tend to last longer include apples, pears, and citrus fruits.

General tip for proteins: if you’re going to buy a lot of meat, break into separate servings and freeze it. Other sources of protein to have on hand include eggs; low sodium canned and dried beans; nut butter and unsalted nuts; cow’s or soy milk and yogurt; canned tuna, sardines, salmon, or chicken - all should be packed in water.

Any combination of these staples mixed with frozen or fresh veggies, fruits, and lean meats will provide a healthy, hearty meal full of nutrients for you and your family.
