Make Your Own Beer Bread

Jennifer Chandler

Bread is one of those items that can be hit or miss on the grocery shelves these days.  Making your own is simpler than you think.

Many bread recipes require live yeast as well as long times for the dough to rise.

Memphis craft brewery Memphis Made Brewing Co. has a recipe that only requires three ingredients and takes three simple steps.

Last week, the brewery started handing out flyers with the recipe to customers who picked up beers at the brewery.

The ingredients are ones you probably already have at home: three cups self-rising flour, ½ cup sugar and one 12-ounce beer. If you don’t have self-rising flour, just make your own by adding two teaspoons baking powder and ¼ teaspoon salt for every one cup of all-purpose flour.

Step 1 is to spray the loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray. Step 2 is to mix together all three ingredients. And the third and final step is to place the dough in the prepared pan and bake at 375 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes.

Andy Ashby, the co-founder of Memphis Made Brewing Co., said the type of beer will slightly change the flavor of the bread.  He said a delicately-hopped cream ale like their Junt beer will result in a more traditional loaf of bread. A malty beer, like Memphis Made’s Fireside, will make a sweeter, more cake-like loaf.

It’s so easy to make, experiment with your favorite beers.  Be sure to save a beer or two to enjoy with a buttered slice of warm, freshly baked bread.
