New MLK Documentary Draws Inspiration and Material from Memphis

James Rada, a professor and documentary filmmaker from Ithaca College in New York, may live far away from the Southern cities where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led the civil rights movement. But when the 50th Anniversary of King's death was commemorated last year, he brought a dozen journalism students to Memphis to help cover the event for WKNO-FM. He also gathered interviews and other material while he was here for his latest documentary "With Infinite Hope: MLK and the Civil Rights Movement," airing Monday on WKNO-TV and other PBS stations nationwide.

Rada spoke with us about why he likes to interview the so-called "footsoldiers" of the movement, and how their relationship to history has changed in just the last couple of years.

Reporting from the gates of Graceland to the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, Christopher has covered Memphis news, arts, culture and politics for more than 20 years in print and on the radio. He is currently WKNO's News Director and Senior Producer at the University of Memphis' Institute for Public Service Reporting. Join his conversations about the Memphis arts scene on the WKNO Culture Desk Facebook page.
