Press Release: StoryCorps Memphis Visit 2019

StoryCorps is partnering with WKNO-FM 91.1 to record, preserve, and share the stories of Memphis, TN!

Thanks to the generous support of CROSSTOWN CONCOURSE, WKNO-FM 91.1 will host StoryCorps for 4 weeks to record the stories of local residents

(Memphis, TN – September 4, 2019) — StoryCorps, a renowned nonprofit organization celebrating the stories of everyday Americans, will record interviews in Memphis from Tuesday, September 10, 2019 to Wednesday, October 9, 2019 as part of its cross-country MobileBooth tour. Having collected more than 65,000 interviews from Americans in all 50 states, StoryCorps has gathered one of the largest single collections of human voices ever recorded.

StoryCorps’ MobileBooth — an Airstream trailer outfitted with a recording studio—will be parked at Crosstown Concourse at 1350 Concourse Ave, Memphis, TN 38104. There are a limited number of reservations available to record interviews. Reservations and details are available by clicking on the StoryCorps link at wknofm.org or by calling 800-850-4406.

The public is invited for Opening Day on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Crosstown Concourse Plaza. The opening day will have speakers from WKNO, Crosstown Concourse, and StoryCorps. The Public can tour the mobile booth and meet the StoryCorps staff. The opening day activities will broadcast live on WKNO-FM 91.1.

In StoryCorps’ MobileBooth, two people are able to record a meaningful conversation with one another about who they are, what they’ve learned in life, and how they want to be remembered. A trained StoryCorps facilitator guides them through the interview process. At the end of each 40-minute recording session, participants receive a complimentary digital copy of their interview. With participant permission, a second copy is archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress for future generations to hear.
