John McEuen & the Circle Band

In 1972, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band co-founder and multi-instrumentalist John McEuen invited a group of country, folk, and bluegrass stars into the studio to record what would become one of the most iconic recordings of all time: the 3-LP set "Will the Circle be Unbroken."

John McEuen will bring his Circle Band (and special guests) to Bartlett Performing Arts & Conference Center on Saturday, November 16, at 7:30 a.m. The event will be a musical and multimedia look back at McEuen's long career with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the genesis of this classic piece of American musical history.

In this extended version of Checking on the Arts, Darel Snodgrass talks with John McEuen about his early days selling magic tricks at Disneyland with Steve Martin, the beginnings of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in Laurel Canyon in the 1960s, McEuen's recording with bluegrass and country idols, his new record, and more.

John McEuen | Legendary Performer

I began piano lessons at age 6, trumpet at age 9, and began teaching myself the guitar at 10. My electronics knowledge comes from my father, who had the RCA television and stereo shop in my hometown of Pocahontas, Arkansas for nearly 20 years. My dad is still fixing televisions at age 79.
