I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

Jennifer Chandler

Whoever wrote the lyrics to the song in the 1920s was right on target!  There is nothing better than a scoop of creamy ice cream – especially this time of year.

There are so many great ice cream shops in Memphis.  I have a list of 10 of my favorite independently-owned ice cream shops in a story now online at The Commercial Appeal.  Each is a one-of-a-kind establishment and offers a unique selection of frozen ice cream flavors and treats.

From Collierville to downtown, here are three must-try spots to grab a scoop of handmade ice cream.

Levee Creamery

Located at the corner of S. Houston Levee and Wolf River Blvd. in Collierville, Levee Creamery makes fresh batches of ice cream every day of the week. Each day their case has 16 different flavors to choose.  The selection changes often since they currently have a rotation of 25 different flavors, each with a fun Memphis name.

La Michoacana

La Michoacana is known across Memphis for its wide variety of homemade Mexican paletas and ice creams. Choose from flavors like Rum Raisin, Mexican Vanilla and Ferrero Rocher (you know, like the candy.) Unique flavors like Sweet Corn and Pine Nut are not to be overlooked.  There are five locations in Memphis; the Summer Avenue restaurant is the largest.

Sweet Magnolia Gelato Co.

Sweet Magnolia Gelato Company owner Hugh Balthrop describes his hand-crafted gelatos and sorbets as “chef-inspired, locally-inspired and Southern-inspired.” Sweet Magnolia’s frozen treats have been available in Memphis stores by the pint since 2011. Last year, Balthrop opened an ice cream shop in Puck Food Hall on S. Main St.
