It's Barbeque Festival Time!

Memphis in May

Starting Wednesday, the streets of downtown Memphis will be filled with the delicious aroma of smoky barbecue...

....wafting up from the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest in Tom Lee Park.

Nearly 225 teams will travel from around the world and across the U.S. to compete for the title of World Champion.

There are plenty of activities to make sure you feel part of the contest’s festivities. Here are three on my list this year.

BBQ Alley is the place for festival attendees to experience what everyone comes to the Cooking Contest to experience – top-notch barbecue! This special area features three well-known barbecue restaurants plus Big Green Egg serving up a variety of BBQ including pork ribs, pulled pork, beef and poultry. BBQ Alley is a ticketed event on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. $16 tickets are available at memphisinmay.org.

Want to learn to grill like a pit-master? Sign up for the Cooker Caravan. This is a free guided tour of some of the best competition teams. Your guided tour will include cooking info, a chance to see a variety of specialty grills and smokers plus expert tips. This is a free tour, however, space is limited and you'll need to sign up at the Cooker Caravan table, located in the middle of the park near the Judges Tent.

On Thursday night head over to the Main Stage at 6 p.m. for the Miss Piggy Idol contest.  This is a contest not to be missed! Where else in the world will you find grown men parading around in tutus and snouts?! Competing teams ham it up to win this coveted title by writing and performing original lyrics and choreography. It’s down right hysterical!
