James Le Sueur on Algeria as an Example of Major Global Shifts in the Middle-East

2014-11-06lesueur.jpg

Algeria has been on the front lines of the major global shifts playing out in the Arab world, in Africa and beyond.

Algeria merits our focus and attention because it seems that what we are seeing in a number of places around the world today, most notably in Egypt, played out in Algeria two decades ago. Most of us are not very familiar with the history of Algeria, so the discussion includes a general overview from the French occupation of Algeria through to Algerian independence in 1962.

My mother introduced me to WKNO-FM and public radio long before I can remember. I suppose the first thing I really recall about WKNO-FM is that every afternoon, when my mother picked me up from school, the radio was tuned-in to The World, then All Things Considered, probably beginning around age 8. The way these reporters and hosts took you from the comfort of your mom's van to wherever in the world they were reporting from absolutely fascinated me. From then on, I was officially hooked.
