Greater Giving Moment

Thursdays at 7:31 AM and 8:31 AM

Julia McDonald from the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis shares how to give smarter and do more good for your causes and your community.

  • Presidents Day, initially established to honor George Washington's birthday, is celebrated on the third Monday of February every year. Today it is often associated with shopping sales and a long weekend. As we commemorate Presidents Day, let's reflect on more than just a day off. This occasion is not just about past leaders; it is a celebration of democracy.
  • We honor and celebrate Black History Month, recognized every year in February. Black history includes a historical legacy of giving, and Black philanthropy has been prevalent in Memphis practically since our founding.
  • Do you feel rooted in Greater Memphis and wish you could do more to create impact here? Do you have ideas for how greater investment could help tackle our community’s needs or build its assets?
  • It’s amazing the impact one strategic charitable investment can have. In our annual Nonprofit Capacity Building grant round, the Community Foundation just awarded $15,000 to the nonprofit DeNeuville Learning Center to buy 30 laptop computers. That technology will empower women from diverse backgrounds and cultures to improve their lives through education and job readiness.
  • Nearly four years after the onset of COVID, you—like many Americans—may remain deeply concerned about our mental health crisis. During the pandemic, symptoms of anxiety and depression rose 25 percent, according to the World Health Organization. They remain significant—especially for people experiencing household job loss, young adults, and women.
  • Kacky Walton talks with Carlee Zamora, the Adult Education Coordinator at Memphis Botanic Garden. Zamora discusses Memphis Botanic Garden's ongoing series of art classes taught by some of the most esteemed local painters and creators, including Fred Rawlinson, Judy Nocifora, and Becky Ziemer.
  • Kacky Walton speaks with Kim Halyak about Experience Memphis Gardens, which kicks off this Saturday, May 18, in the historic Cooper-Young neighborhood and runs through Sunday, June 30.
